“Future/Elsewhere/Past” is a tribute to the musical ideas of Paul Buckmaster as he initially conceived the music for the composition “On the Corner”. Miles Davis asked him to write some musical settings in 1972 for an upcoming album recording session. The idea was that they would combine street grooves, African and Indian percussion with European avant garde music. Paul Tingen’s excellent and informative book “Miles Beyond: The Electric Explorations of Miles Davis, 1967-1991” gives lots of backround about the making of "On the Corner“. Buckmaster essentially conceived the piece to go from switched on street rhythms to dropped off rhythms floating in space like short signal interwoven with static interference. James Brown and Sly Stone were the inspiration for the on rhythms and Stockhausen was the inspiration for the off rhythms. For what ever reason, “On the Corner” didn’t end up having the radical drop offs into outerspace that Buckmaster initially planned. After reading about his ideas, I thought about what if this structure of “on and off” was followed ,then what would the music sound like. “Future/Elsewhere/Past” is my interpretation of the musical structure of “On the Corner” as Paul Buckmaster initially conceived it. For more information about “the Complete On the Corner Sessions” 6 cd boxset see www.milesdavis.com/latest_release.asp . Paul Buckmaster writes about his experience with the project in the accompanying booklet. For more Vedic Space Program music: |
